Travis E Long, Director Technical Support Division, WV Division of Highway

After serving in the US Army, Travis began his career with the West Virginia Division of Highways in 1994.

In April 2021 Travis was appointed as the Director of the Technical Support Division where he is responsible for NEPA and Permitting, Geotechnical Services (including drilling), Alternate Project Delivery, Publications and Survey and Mapping services.

He resides in Yawkey, WV with his wife, Kristi, and their two daughters, Kirsten and Katie. In his free time Travis operates a working livestock farm, is a SSAC Soccer referee and teaches at a local church.

CORRIDOR H ABSTRACT

The West Virginia Division of Highways undertook one of many Appalachian Corridor projects, Corridor H, in the early 1970’s. Construction on the first segment near I-79 began in 1973, coinciding with the advent of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Clean Water Act. With the invaluable support of Senator Robert C. Byrd, the project has navigated decades of meticulous planning, environmental clearances, and phased construction.

Corridor H represents a monumental challenge and achievement, traversing some of the most difficult and scenic terrain in West Virginia. As of 2024, only three segments remain, with one currently under construction and the other two slated to begin construction within the next year.

Many West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOH) and Federal Highway administration (FHWA) employees have dedicated their careers to this project, overcoming obstacles that early planners could scarcely have imagined. The route cuts through areas rich in natural resources, endangered species habitats, national forests, historic districts, battlefields, federal lands, and challenging topography—all of which complicate the construction of a four-lane highway.

The project features numerous signature bridges and massive earthwork contracts, which have tested the resolve and ingenuity of highway engineers. Today, with construction costs exceeding $10 million per mile and new endangered species being added to regulatory lists annually, the scrutiny from resource agencies and environmental advocates is more intense than ever. Despite these challenges, we are now approaching the final mile of this ambitious project.

As we reflect on the immense effort and innovation that have brought us to this point, we can appreciate the dedication and expertise of the many professionals involved. Their work not only underscores the complexity of modern infrastructure projects but also highlights the enduring commitment to connecting communities and fostering economic growth in West Virginia.
